Parque España (Spain Park) is located between 9th and 11th Streets and 3rd and 7th Avenues. This park stands out for its large amount of trees and bamboo mangroves. Walking through its paths while hearing the bird songs is one of the best feelings to take with you from San José.

The park was opened in 1895 being the place where the musicians José María Zeledón Brenes and Manuel María Gutiérrez had performed the national anthem of Costa Rica for the first time in 1903.

You can get to know the famous Yellow House in your visit, a building distinguished for its ochre colour and Spanish Baroque style which was built in 1926 as a work of the architect Henry Whitfield. In the past, it was the Presidential Residence and the Legislative Assembly while, nowadays, it is the venue for the offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Opposite to the building, there is the ceiba tree planted by the American president John F. Kennedy in his visit to Costa Rica in 1963.

Also, you can find the Pavilion in the northwest corner of the park, a building with a colonial style of 1947 where there is a ceramic image of the Virgin of Orosi and the Cathedral of Heredia. On the other side, the southwest, the statue of conqueror Juan Vázquez de Coronado stands.

There are busts and statues in honour of eminent and historical figures like the Queen Elisabeth II of Spain or the American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.

It should be taken into account that this cosy park is set up in a outstanding place, because it is surrounded by many of the most important buildings of San José that you should not miss, for example, the Jade Museum, the Metal Building, the National Security Institute and the Morazán Park.
