Puntarenas city, capital of the Puntarenas province, is one of the most tourist places in Central Pacific in Costa Rica, both nationally and internationally. Its attractiveness is mainly based on a mixture of sun-and-sand resorts and beautiful and protected nature areas, such as fascinating islands and coves, which turn it into a regular arrival point of cruises. Thanks to this, the city was declared “National Resort” in 1940.

Puntarenas is not only a place with spectacular landscapes and natural treasures; it also boasts about having many interest spots of great historical importance, such as the Muelle Grande Quay, the market, the cathedral and the Parques Mora and Canas park.

Nevertheless, there are many other things to see in this appealing city, such as La Punta lighthouse, where the bell tower of Nuestra Senora del Carmen shrine is located; or the Paseo de los Turistas promenade, a frequented boulevard next to the beach packed with bars and restaurants, as well as amazing hotels, nightclubs and areas to skate and walk.

Here you can also hear the traditional music of Puntarenas, featured by the tonadas (not danceable folk music with lyrics of great status), present in the Puntarenas Carnival and in the Fiestas de los Novios Festival.

Puntarenas is also relevant because of its gastronomy. One of the best experiences of your vacation will be the taste of typical dishes, as the vigorón, the ceviche or the traditional “Churchill” slush.
