Zarcero is a small but picturesque and charming village surrounded by coffee plantations. It is located at 32 miles from the northeast of Alajuela, and it is 5577 ft above sea level, becoming almost the highest spot in this part of the Central Mountain Range of Costa Rica.

It is located in a very rainy area, so both its surroundings and its parks are always blooming and green, which delights all the tourists that visit Zarcero.

It is considered as one of the few Costa Rican villages that truly has his own character and personality: it is really picturesque! In addition, it is always calm and relaxing since it is far away from the crowded big cities and tourist centers.

In Zarcero, you can find a beautiful “hut-style” church, Iglesia San Rafael Arcangel Church, that contains incredible religious paintings made of pastel-tone chalk.

The Evangelista Blanco Brenes Park is located just in front of the church. This wonderful park is a unique place in Costa Rica. Having the church just behind, this lush garden looks like a royal one with its topiaries from fairytales: birds, elephants, lightbulbs, etc., in addition to Gaudi-styled arches.
