The Monumento al Boyero (Monument to the Oxherd) was inaugurated in April 2003 and, since then, it has become one of the most photographed tourist attractions of Alajuela province. It is a symbolic spot for the Atenas county which represents the area’s most rooted tradition: the transportation of agricultural products on ox carts.

Its location is not accidental: it is located on the former oxcart route, once used by the oxherds to transport coffee grains to the Pacific Coast from the Central Valley.
