The Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de Ujarrás Church Ruins are located only some kilometres from the village of Paraíso, in the Cartago province. These ruins are the remainder of the oldest church in Costa Rica.

It is estimated to have been built between 1575 and 1580, although it was abandoned in 1833 after a terrible flood. Legend has it that a fisherman found the virgin in this place and, as he could not carry it, he decided to establish there its shrine.
When visiting this historical church, in addition to admiring its orange limestone walls, you will go over the splendid gardens that surround it. On Sundays, local people meet there and spend a day outdoors. Thus, it is a perfect place to interact with local people and spend a nice family afternoon.
