The whitewashed walls of the Iglesia de San José de Orosí Church hide one of the oldest buildings in Costa Rica, given that it dates from the Spanish colonial times. Devoted to San José, it was built by friars in 1753, ten years after their settlement in a monastery close by. Therefore, it presents a simple façade, poor materials and a simple style. This is the typical mission temple, built by a mendicant order, the Franciscans, characterized by their austerity.

Thus, you will observe its structure, simple but ingenious, because the church and the monastery are integrated through an L-shaped corridor. In the middle of the architectural composition there is a courtyard, and in the southern part, the cemetery is placed. The thick adobe walls have let the temple survive after numerous natural disasters up to now. The restrained façade of the building is based on a triangular shaped body with a gable roof of tile. It also has a bell tower attached to the construction that stands out. In addition, the inside is truly simple, with three naves separated by strange pilasters, because they are made of cedar wood even though they lay on stone bases. It has a coffered ceiling and, in the main altar, you can contemplate a carved wood retable that contains the San José statue. There are two chapels in the left nave, named “de las Ánimas” and “Bautismal”; while in the right one there is the sacristy attached to the monastery, where the Religious Art Museum of Orosí is situated currently.
