The Iglesia San Rafael (San Rafael Church) church rises over the canton of Heredia since 1887 as a real lookout, which made it become the symbol of the canton all over the country.

This Catholic temple of neogothic architectural influence was declared Historical Architectural Heritage of Costa Rica in 2004. Many materials, as well as equipment, were brought from different places, such as the iron columns (Belgium); the clock and the baptismal font (Italy); the bells of the tower (France); and the three altars, the via crucis and the pulpit (Austria), in order to carry out its construction. One of the most outstanding elements of this building is its main window, which is also considered to be the most valuable window church in the country.

Despite its age, the Iglesia de San Rafael de Heredia is currently a perfectly well preserved building, since it underwent a restoration process in 2015
