The Zona Protectora Tivives is located in Tivives, in the Esparza canton, belonging to the Puntarenas province, in Costa Rica.

Tivives is a harbor and cove surrounded by Punta Tivives, located 5 km from the south of Caldera harbor, which, along with a little islet, two reefs immersed near the mentioned tip, the Mata Limón mangrove and the Tivives and Las Flores estuaries, form the Tivives Protection Zone. This area has a great ecological importance because it is the last stronghold of the coastal tropical dry forest of the Central Pacific region.

It should be mentioned that this zone has hills with over 45 % slopes, which are vulnerable to suffer from erosion, as well as peaks and hills, as those of Coyolar and Cambalache. Thus, it is essential to protect its flora and fauna for its preservation and investigation, since many species are endangered.

In addition, this amazing zone has also the aim to protect the drainage and maintenance network of the flow and quality of the water of the Jesús María River, as well as the water of the two wells used in the Caldera Project and the Costa Rican Institute of Pacific harbors, the gorges formed in the Cambalache, Corralillo, and other headwaters and springs used for the people of this region.
