Isla Chira is the second most extensive island in Costa Rica, being the first one Isla Calero Island. This beautiful island belongs to the Puntarenas canton and is part of the archipelago located in the Nicoya Gulf.

The legend has it that the name “Chira” comes from the present that a mighty priest of the god Jaguar, named as Nacaome, gave to Princess Chira as its wedding gift, after he stole her from her tribe. It is said that Chira was the first person that lived in the island.

Chira Island is formed by the villages of Bocana, Lagartero, Montero, Pilas, Pochote, Puerto Coloradito, Puerto Mauricio and Puerto Palito, being the town of Nancite the administrative center of the Chira district.

This impressive island has the widest biodiversity of flora of dry tropical forest in Costa Rica, as well as many mangroves in its eastern zone.

Chira Island’s economy is mainly based on artisanal fishing, agriculture, salt mines and tourism, the latter being promoted thanks to the natural resources of the island and to the amazing natural landscape that offers, for instance, the Tempisque River, and also the mangroves.

Besides, it also has many restaurants, bars and shops and leisure zones to satisfy all the needs of the tourists, making of this place an essential destination for those who want to know the natural richness that is hidden in its beaches, mountains and all the green landscapes where nature takes a leading role.
