The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, later renamed as Monteverde Biological Reserve, is a protected and private area located 5 km from the center of Santa Elena, in the town of Monteverde, from which its name comes due to the proximity between both of them. This wonderful Costa Rican reserve, added to the Volcán Arenal National Park, forms the biological corridor called "Complejo de Bosque Nuboso Arenal-Monteverde".

This reserve, founded in 1962, belongs to the the Tropical Science Center (TSC) and to a scientific, educative and non-profit NGO. Besides, since 1972, it has been used as a living laboratory for many scientific studies. From 1974, it has established itself as an essential tourist destination, which helped to boost ecotourism in the Monteverde zone. Therefore, Monteverde Biological reserve is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Costa Rica, with 70,000 tourists a year.

This biological preservation area is used to protect the flora, fauna and water resources sheltered inside and to allow many scientific studies and environmental educational programs to be carried out. The reserve possesses six ecological zones, mainly of virgin forest, with great biodiversity, made up of more than 2,500 plant species, 100 mammal species, 400 bird species, 120 reptile and amphibian species and thousands of insect species.

The climate has a considerable maritime influence, especially due to the humid Trade Winds that enter the country from the northwest, moving from the Caribbean Sea towards the Pacific. When these winds enter the Tilarán mountain range, orographic rains arise as a consequence of the cooling that they experience, or, otherwise, fog, which characterizes the cloud forest, the predominant type of forest in the area. As a result, this reserve has a tropical rainy climate, where the seasonal variation of temperature and rainfall is minimal, and both remain high throughout the year.

Discover this amazing nature reserve of great scientific and ecologic value, which is a preservation example, both nationally and internationally, as well as a highly appealing tourist place because of its lush vegetation and its magnificent landscapes.
