Emergencies in Costa Rica

Find out what to do and the facilities available in case of emergency during your travel to Costa Rica

If you are travelling through Costa Rica and you need medical assistance, you can make a free phone call to the 911 emergency number. The emergency personnel will make you some basic questions to know about your situation and to guide the personnel that will take care of you into applying the correct cares. Therefore, you must help them and do not put down the telephone until you are told to do so.

For further assistance, you can call the touristic police that has local offices in the main touristic points. You can also call San José’s touristic police (506) 2258-1008 or (506) 2258-1022, or ask for information via email:  policia_turistica@msp.go.cr
